The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered a major institutional setback in Adamawa State after all 21 local government council chairmen, alongside 226 ward councillors and appointed area development administrators, resigned from the party to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The mass defection, formalised through resignation letters submitted to respective PDP ward chairmen across the 21 local government headquarters on Monday, effectively dismantles the opposition party’s grassroots machinery across the state ahead of the January 2027 general elections.
In statements accompanying their resignations, the local government leaders explained that the decision followed extensive consultations with their families, political associates, and local constituents.
Confirming the move, the Chairman of Demsa Local Government Council, Mr Akham Jalo, stated that aligning with Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s vision informed his decision to defect to the APC in order to better serve his community.
The APC State Publicity Secretary, Victor Dogo, confirmed the reception of the local government officials into the ruling party, attributing the realignment to loyalty toward Governor Fintiri. Dogo observed that remaining in the opposition while their principal governed on the platform of the APC was counterproductive. Political observers view the mass movement as the consolidation of earlier defections by the governor and members of the State House of Assembly.
The development carries substantial political ramifications for the 2027 electoral cycle, given that Adamawa State is the home base of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The wholesale exit strips the PDP of its foundational ward-level structures and polling unit mobilization networks, consolidating the APC’s political control across the state and strengthening its footprint within the North-East geopolitical zone.
