The conflict in Ukraine has escalated sharply following one of the deadliest single-day civilian strikes of the year in Kramatorsk, coinciding with a severe diplomatic crisis between Kyiv and South Korea.
At approximately 10:00 AM, a Russian glide bomb struck a street and bus stop in the frontline city of Kramatorsk, tearing through two packed passenger buses. State emergency services and Donetsk Regional Governor Vadym Filashkin confirmed that at least 30 people were killed instantly and 18 others sustained severe injuries.
Local authorities noted that the extreme destructive force of the weapon required extensive DNA verification to identify the dead.
Kramatorsk and neighbouring Slovyansk form the defensive “fortress belt” in the Donbas region. Ukrainian officials accused Moscow of deliberately shifting its tactical focus towards public transport and water supply infrastructure to compel civilian flight. Following the attack, Governor Filashkin ordered the immediate suspension of all civilian public transport across both cities and expanded mandatory evacuation directives for families with children.
Parallel to the battlefield tragedy, diplomatic relations between Ukraine and South Korea suffered an unprecedented breakdown as Seoul officially recalled its Ambassador to Ukraine, Park Ki-chang.
The standoff was triggered by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s address at the United Nations General Assembly, in which he disclosed that Ukraine had captured and transferred two North Korean prisoners of war to South Korea.
The administration of South Korean President Lee Jae-myung stated that the revelation breached a mutual confidentiality pact regarding the intelligence operation. According to Seoul, Kyiv had originally requested total secrecy over the transfer to pre-empt domestic public criticism for surrendering high-value foreign captives rather than using them in prisoner exchanges for Ukrainian soldiers held by Russia.
Tensions escalated after Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha characterised the incident as a diplomatic misunderstanding without issuing an official apology. President Lee accused Kyiv of undermining his credibility, prompting the immediate recall of Ambassador Park to Seoul.
The dispute deteriorated further after Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov warned of an imminent flare-up along the inter-Korean border. President Lee condemned the remarks, accusing Ukrainian authorities of reckless rhetoric designed to pressure Seoul into abandoning its policy against providing lethal military aid.
