Police operatives in Ogun State have arrested a 56-year-old man, Madarikan Emehinola, in connection with the death of his 40-year-old wife, Igbagbo Erobe, who died in a domestic fire outbreak on Sunday.
The incident occurred at a residence in Igbo-Edu Village, within the Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, following what community members described as an intense domestic altercation between the couple.
Neighbours attempted to rescue the victim, but she became trapped inside the burning room and suffered fatal burns before she could escape.
Officers attached to the Abigi Divisional Police Headquarters deployed to the scene and apprehended Emehinola as the prime suspect.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arrest on Sunday evening, stating that the matter is currently being treated as a suspected case of arson and homicide. The victim’s remains have been deposited in a state mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
The case is being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at Eleweran, Abeokuta, for detailed forensic analysis and further interrogation.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, assured that the homicide section will conduct an exhaustive investigation, reiterating the command’s commitment to tackling extreme domestic violence and prosecuting serious crimes in accordance with the law.
