President Bola Tinubu has offered prayers for Nigeria’s peace, security, and sustained economic revival as he commenced religious rites during the Umrah pilgrimage in Makkah, the State House announced.
In an official statement issued on Friday, October 30, 2026, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that the President sought divine guidance for the nation’s leadership and prayed for stronger bonds of brotherhood among all Nigerians. President Tinubu expressed profound optimism for continued economic progress, social development, and a more secure future, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to building a peaceful, united, and prosperous federation where citizens of all faiths and backgrounds can live in safety and dignity.
The President touched down at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah on the evening of Thursday, October 29, 2026, following his departure from the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. He was received on arrival by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Yakubu Gambo, alongside the Saudi Head of Royal Protocol, Ahmad bin Thafir. The official delegation accompanying the President includes state governors AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, Babagana Zulum of Borno, Mai Mala Buni of Yobe, Uba Sani of Kaduna, Umar Namadi of Jigawa, and Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto.
Before departing Abuja, the Commander-in-Chief performed key security functions, inaugurating five newly acquired helicopters for the Nigerian Air Force and commissioning the reconstructed Presidential Air Fleet Hangar to enhance operational readiness against internal security threats.
The religious retreat carries significant political resonance ahead of the January 16, 2027 general elections, where the incumbent faces major opposition challengers from platforms including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Senior administration aides noted that the pilgrimage aligns with an established personal precedent, referencing a similar spiritual exercise conducted by Tinubu in late 2022 before his victory in the 2023 presidential election.
The Presidency also dismissed speculation regarding the purpose of the trip, clarifying that the head of state remains in high spirits and is fully focused on his spiritual devotions in the Holy Land before returning to Nigeria next week.
