The political landscape shifted dramatically on November 3, 2026, as Democrat Aber Kawas achieved a historic New York State Legislature victory. The progressive candidate became the first Palestinian American and the first hijab-wearing woman elected to the chamber. Official tallies from the New York State Board of Elections confirmed she won State Senate District 12 in western Queens by a landslide.
According to the state electoral board, Democrat Aber Kawas secured approximately seventy-five per cent of the vote, with ninety per cent of the ballots officially counted. Concurrently at the federal level, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib decisively won re-election to the United States House of Representatives. Federal Election Commission data showed Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib retaining Michigan’s 12th Congressional District with exactly 72.7 per cent of the vote.
Running as a first-time candidate and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Democrat Aber Kawas campaigned on a progressive platform. Her official campaign manifesto heavily focused on working-class economic relief, universal healthcare, stronger tenant protections, and expanding public transportation. On foreign and immigration policy, she maintained a staunch anti-war stance while protecting immigrant communities from federal enforcement.
Prior to her historic New York State Legislature victory, Democrat Aber Kawas spent over fifteen years as a grassroots community organiser in Queens. She actively developed initiatives seeking state legislation to strip non-profit status from registered charities funding illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank. Her grassroots momentum attracted high-profile endorsements from Mayor of New York City Zohran Mamdani, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib.
