Opposition leaders across major political parties are closing in on a joint presidential ticket under the G100 Coalition framework to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
The alliance brings together several key opposition platforms, including the Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM). Prominent presidential contenders under active consideration to lead the ticket include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Donald Duke, and Prince Adewole Adebayo.
SDP National Chairman Professor Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe confirmed that ongoing consultations between party chieftains and presidential aspirants have progressed significantly towards adopting a single, formidable candidate capable of confronting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
To protect the joint platform against procedural pitfalls, the coalition has set up two specialized panels: a Legal Committee composed of party legal advisers to scrutinize electoral statutes, constitutional provisions, and judicial precedents against technical disqualifications, and a Media and Publicity Committee tasked with driving a unified communication narrative on national economic and security issues.
Political observers note that whilst consensus talks are advancing, navigating the personal ambitions of top contenders remains a central challenge. Key segments of the Obidient Movement insist that Peter Obi must head the ticket, whilst Atiku Abubakar’s camp maintains an active bid, though indicating openness to a transparent consensus mechanism.
Should the coalition fail to agree on a single consensus flagbearer, leaders are preparing a secondary pact to form a united front behind whichever opposition candidate advances to an electoral runoff.
