FG Begins Commonwealth Scholarship Interviews in Abuja

Nigerian postgraduate applicants gathered in Abuja for the physical screening exercise of the UK Commonwealth Scholarship

The federal government has commenced the physical Commonwealth Scholarship interviews in Abuja, processing a final shortlist of high-achieving candidates. The selection exercise, which began on Monday, November 2, 2026, is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

The Federal Ministry of Education is organising the face-to-face nomination exercise under the strict supervision of the Department of Scholarship Awards. Out of the thousands of applicants who applied through the electronic system, 2,000 Nigerian candidates successfully scaled the initial screening phase to secure an interview slot.

The assessment panel features selected university professors, domain scholars, and retired education directors. Director overseeing the Permanent Secretary’s Office, Dr. Folake Olatunji-David, directed the panelists to filter candidates using three non-negotiable criteria.

Evaluators must verify academic merit, assess the rigour of proposed study plans, and determine the potential developmental impact the candidates will bring back to solve local challenges. This year, the Commonwealth Scholarship interviews are heavily aligned with the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative.

Driven by Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and Minister of State, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, the government aims to channel these international opportunities towards developing highly skilled professionals capable of filling structural gaps within the tertiary education sector.

For the academic session that commenced in September 2026, only 56 Nigerian scholars successfully made it through the entire process to begin their postgraduate programmes in the United Kingdom.

Although the central logistics are anchored in Abuja, the assessment framework ensures recommendations are drawn across all six geopolitical zones to maintain regional inclusiveness. Ultimately, the national panel does not grant the final award but only selects the absolute strongest pool of nominees, forwarding the final list to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for confirmation.
