Worker Trapped as Building Collapses in Lagos Demolition Accident

Emergency search-and-rescue teams have been deployed to the Ijegun/Ikotun axis of Alimosho Local Government Area after a storey building collapsed during a manual demolition exercise, leaving one labourer trapped beneath the rubble and another injured.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, 26 October 2026, along Adedoyin Street, when the structural load-bearing sections of the building abruptly gave way mid-operation, crashing down on the demolition crew on site.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that the State Command and Control Centre received a structural distress call at exactly 1:44 pm. Following the alert, the agency activated its emergency response plan, dispatching the LASEMA Beta Team directly from its Igando operational base to commence tactical extraction.

Preliminary reports indicate that two workers were directly affected by the structural failure. One labourer sustained a severe hand laceration and was evacuated to a nearby medical facility by local bystanders prior to the arrival of first responders, whilst a second worker remains trapped beneath heavy concrete slabs.

A coordinated emergency response unit – comprising operatives from LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) – has established a safety perimeter around Adedoyin Street. Responders have cordoned off the immediate perimeter to secure the shifting rubble, prevent secondary collapses, and facilitate search-and-rescue operations aimed at extricating the trapped victim safely.
