Minister of Finance Taiwo Oyedele warning against fuel subsidy reversal at IMF World Bank meeting

The Federal Government has released ₦38.93 billion to 166 public tertiary institutions across Nigeria under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund, targeting critical infrastructure deficits and modernising teaching and learning facilities.

The disbursement was confirmed in an official statement issued in Abuja by the Head of Media for the Federal Ministry of Finance, Efe Ovuakporie. The capital intervention covers universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across both federal and state tiers, enabling beneficiary institutions to either commence approved new infrastructural developments or accelerate stalled capital projects.

According to the official allocation framework published by the Ministry of Finance, the university sector received the lion’s share, with ₦28.50 billion distributed across 79 institutions, including premier universities such as the University of Ibadan (UI), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and the University of Benin (UNIBEN). A total of ₦5.76 billion was allocated to 46 polytechnics, whilst 41 colleges of education received a collective intervention of ₦4.67 billion.

The Ministry of Finance highlighted that the financial release forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing implementation of the negotiated terms within its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to enhance learning environments and avert recurring industrial disputes.

To guarantee financial transparency and project delivery, the Presidency has instituted a trilateral monitoring framework requiring close coordination between the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Federal Ministry of Education, and the respective governing councils of beneficiary institutions to ensure funds are channelled directly into upgrading laboratories, lecture halls, and academic infrastructure.
